Emmitt J. Nelson Bio

Emmitt J. Nelson, President of Nelson Consulting, Inc. has been in the safety consulting business since retirement from Shell Oil Company. He has authored many works on The Zero Injury Safety Leadership Concept written to be applicable to any business enterprise interested in achieving Zero Employee Injury.

During the last five years of his career with Shell Oil Company he was Corporate Manger of Construction Relations and Engineering Standards. In this capacity he led a corporate emphasis on bringing contractor safety performance into line with Shell’s own employee’s safety performance. To accomplish this he led in the creation of a corporate-wide contractor safety strategy and presenting it to both Shell’s and contractor management leadership. Shell’s contractor safety record remains remarkable. In one four year period Shell contractors worked over 17,000,000 work-hours with a BLS/OSHA Recordable rate of 0.30.

Immediately upon retirement from Shell, contractors interested in reducing injury to their employees enlisted Emmitt as a consultant. In 1992 he founded Nelson Consulting, Incorporated, a Texas Corporation specializing in teaching the Zero Injury Concept. He assists clients in the installation of the safety management processes required to create a working culture where injury is a rare event.

The best of his clients achieve over 1,000,000 work hours with zero Recordables. At least two construction contractors (both clients) in the USA have completed over 2,000,000 work hours with Zero Recordable injuries. One client achieved over 2,500,000 hours in 2001 with “Zero Recordable” injuries and another achieved over 4,800,000 hours with “Zero Recordables” in 2004.

Emmitt is a B.S. graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University, and a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.

In 1999 he was honored with the “Construction Industry Safety Excellence” award by the Business Roundtable.

In 2000 he was honored for his construction industry wide contribution to safety excellence with election to membership in The National Academy of Construction.*

In 2003 he was honored by being named an “Outstanding Instructor of the Year” by The Construction Industry Institute.***

While employed by Shell Oil Company, he was Shell’s representative to The Business Roundtable** Construction Committee where he served as Committee Chairman for two years.

Additionally he has served as Co-Chairman of The Center for Construction Education, at Texas A&M University.

He also served as Chairman of the Construction Industry Institute*** Zero Accidents Research Taskforce from 1990 to 1994. This Taskforce performed the initial CII research into the Zero Injury phenomenon uncovering the basic safety management strategies used by those employers who are successful in working millions of hours with zero injury.

After the Zero Accidents Taskforce completed its work Emmitt took the actual research data and created a Zero Injury Safety Culture Assessment tool based on the CII Zero Injury Best Practices found in the research. This assessment tool, now licensed to ZeroInjuryInstitute.com, is used to conduct interviews of a cross section of a company’s employees on how the current safety program content compares to the CII Zero Injury Best Practices. Additionally the tool obtains a Quality of implementation opinion from the interviewees on how well the techniques are being performed on a scale of 1-10. The assessment report gives the client a score on a scale of 1-100 that compares the client’s safety program content with projects using all the CII Best Practices.

Emmitt’s Zero Injury educational presentations/seminars, also licensed to ZeroInjuryInstitute.com are beneficial to employers of all types. These explain how, with specifics, a dedicated and committed employer can lead their organization in a safety culture change where injury to employees becomes a very rare event. The presentations are best followed by facilitates workshops during which the client’s employees furnish insight for improvement in their current safety management process. Through this input a prioritized plan of action is created by the group to move from the typical “injuries happen” mindset to one where “Zero Employee Injury” is an overarching “value” that is pervasive within the client’s workforce.

During this time the BRT Construction Committee completed a number of significant industry changing accomplishments. One of these was the CICE (Construction Industry Cost Effectiveness Project,) another was the CISE (Construction Industry Safety Excellence) awards. The latter was implemented while Emmitt was Chairman of this committee.
